haiku poems by Kayla

lonely white cat

in and out

of the darkness

lush green grasses

seeing a box turtle stuck

under an iron gate

creek alive with minnows

a large dead carp floats

near the bank

fishing

dragonflies landing

on reed and rod

my coffee cup

watching a bug swim

across the clouds

hawk overhead

sparrow feathers blow across

the river rocks

dark woodland

mayflies swarm

in bright rays of sunshine

dark woods

the bright flash of fireflies

everywhere

motorcycle girls

seeing girls in skirts and heels

walking down the street

loud argument

hearing the quiet voice

of a chickadee

waiting for you

a full moon rises

above the poplars

sidewalk

a worm's smooth body

wiggles through rough stones

summer afternoon

hearing cicadas

starting and stopping

viewing the stars

bright car lights sweep

across the lawn

summer night

hearing distant traffic noise

and frogs croaking

so silent

party balloons drifting

overhead

through the telescope

the beautiful double star

beta cygni

lonely park bench

a girl watches

the boys hangout

giant oak

beneath huge branches

a tiny acorn

enjoying the quiet

a clap of thunder

shakes the house

break in

a squirrel chewing

a hole in the trash can

radio antenna

ants climb the long wire

some going up some down

not welcomed

the large black hornet

on our white curtains

unexpected

a heavy blanket of rain

floods the street

flower box

a squirrel

taking a dirt bath

big timber creek

the incoming tide

consumes the land

taking a bath

sparrows

in the sand box

behind the reeds

a small pond

of croaking frogs

campfire

snapping and cracking

my thoughts

the campfire out

ashes blow in the wind

my lost sister

pulling and begging

at the end of a leash

the dog's owner

campfire

faces dance around

our circle

low tide

a minnow swims a puddle

left in mud

daily greeting

pulling and jerking a chain

the neighbor's dog

Haiku by Kayla

autumn

summer robins gather

in withered fields

my lost sister

the campfire out

ashes blow in the wind

mother's grave

leaves fall gently

on the still earth

mother's grave

i sweep away the leaves

revealing her name

bird flies away

the calico cat

flicks her tail

Nicholas Virgilio haiku

i have always been a fan of the late American haiku poet Nicholas Virgilio.
At a poetry reading i met his brother Tony, who talked with me about Nicks
early days writing haiku, i really enjoyed our conversation about Nick's life.
i would like to include a few of the poems we discussed.

the following haiku poems were written by Nicholas Virgilio:

lily

out of the water

out of itself

over spatterdocks

turning at corners of air

dragonfly

in the singles' bar

magnifying loneliness

her thick eye glasses

Viet nam monument

darkened by autumn rain

my dead brother's name

autumn twilight

the wreath on the door

lifts in the wind

i am very thankful and delighted to have talked with Tony Virgilio,

thank you Tony........michaela

haiku by Kayla

autumn

through fallen leaves

so much more sky

together

spinning in circles

butterflies

autumn

sunset in the fork

of the maple tree

autumn

seeing the trees

undress

full moon

shadows of the willow tree

spread across the yard

circling overhead

the crying sound

of a lonely hawk

always walking

never in a hurry

shield bug on the wall

dresser table

my mothers ring

now cold

mothers' grave

leaves fall gently

on the still earth

visiting mothers' grave

a flock of noisy starlings

fill a nearby tree

mothers'grave

i sweep away the leaves

covering her name

near mothers' grave

on top of a tomb stone

an unopened cup of coffee

below the giant oak

a young dogwood shows

her first blossoms

tulip poplar

towers high above the house

its baby just grass high

strange rainy season

seeing the deck boards

green with moss

my lost sister

the campfire out

ashes blow in the wind

garden roots

smelling the sweet scent

of sassafras

dead oak

a woodpecker taps out

a morning meal

haiku by Kayla

cemetery

at father's grave

an empty bench

gusty night

the sound of wind chimes

fills up the darkness

rainy day

seeing clouds drift

across the puddles

in the stillness

in the quiet

a lonely field

children off to college

a robins nest in the juniper

now empty

her beautiful dress unfolds

a red rose bud opens

in the side yard

cold morning

African violets bloom

in the warm window box

autumn soon ending

the weeds now withered

the trees now bare

bedroom window

seeing the pleiades

rise above the trees

end of autumn

seeing the squirrels carry leaves

back up the tree

autumn migration

the sound of geese

high overhead

suddenly

the dragon fly completely still

completely bronze

hanging in the shed

my childhood bugle

silent all these years

quiet night

the andromeda galaxy

now above our house

lonely white cat

out of the darkness

into the darkness

quiet house

i cannot find it

cricket with a loud voice

Haiku by Kayla

sunny fragrant day

the metal sheds' interior

dark and musty

vapor trails overhead

last nights snail trails

spread across the sidewalk

this summer

more clover

more rabbits

telescope

stars inside

lightning bugs outside

campfire out

i wash my hands

in a pan of stars

campfire

glimpses of faces

come and go

night fishing

my bobber drifts

across the moon

side walk

a baby robin opens wide

as i pass by

Haiku by Kayla

color of the sun

daffodils shine

through withered weeds

cold spring

robins huddle together

in the pine hay

spring rains

the puddles filling up

with starlings

spring hedgerow

sparrow

on sparrow

dull brown grasses

bright violet crocus

gather nearby

spring morning

yellow daffodils

bow to the wind

on the hedgerow

on the air

the scent of honeysuckle

neighborhood cat

roaming out of the darkness

into the darkness

singing in the rain

a mockingbird

in the hedgerow

this season

more clover

more rabbits

campfire

glimpses of faces

come and go

overcast sky

hearing honking geese

overhead

tossed bread

sparrows gather

on the sidewalk

campfire

snapping and popping

my thoughts

Haiku moments by Kayla

snow covered ground
the neighbors' cat cries
into the darkness

winter snow storm
the neighbors' chickens
still pecking

geese pass overhead
a part of me
follows them

bouncing on the ground
rounded bits of snow
gather the whiteness

december night
very cold
very quiet

winter sunset
one by one the neighbors chickens
go to bed

chilly morning
warm sunshine
lights up my face

among the beer cans
weeds and litter
beautiful flowers
